Chapter 8
âNO INK?â BETH ASKED in amazement. The two of them were sitting on the sofa in her apartment. The same sofa where Carter had sat just short time ago. Two mugs of untouched coffee sat in front of them, long since gone cold. âLike...you canât use your tatù ever?â
Simon sighed, fiddling with his fingers as he avoided her eyes. Their reunion had been a joyous one. Truly, heâd never seen her so happy. Sheâd leapt into his arms, completely unconcerned with whoever might be watching. And to her credit, it was quite a crowd.
Simon hadnât noticed them when heâd been driven in. Perhaps theyâd assembled later. More likely, he was so petrified at the notion of some mysterious test that heâd sailed right past them without even seeing. But a small mob had assembled on the lawns of Guilder. A mob of students and faculty, past and present alumni alike. But unlike most mobs, they werenât standing together in a single swarm. There was a clear line between them, dividing them in two.
The murder trial of Simon Kerrigan had become the tatùed event of the season, and it seemed everyone Simon had ever known, everyone who had ever known him, was there.
The first people he spotted were Isaac and Zane, old classmates from Simonâs school days who had been at the first meeting of the HOC. Both boys had kept in relatively close contact since graduation, although they were kept busy on agency missions themselves. And both made it a point to drop whatever they were doing, in whatever country they were doing it in, to come and show support. Simon was touched. And greatly surprised. But that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Students stood toe to toe with teachers. Those who had been enticed by the âKerrigan legendâ and had continued speaking of his radical ideas long since he had left Guilder behind. Again, to Simonâs surprise, Professor Lanford was amongst them. Their eyes met briefly through the crowd, and the teacher inclined his head ever so slightly in a show of support.
More members of the HOC, fellow agents, even his old case manager, Philip Keene, had come to stand for Simon. People from far and wide. People he had long since forgotten.
But there was another crowd of people as well. Screaming just as loud as their opponents.
At first, Simon thought there had to be some sort of mistake. Was it really possible that so many people had come to fear him? Despise him, even? Think badly enough of him that they were willing to stand here and wave signs that he had killed his own parents?
Teachers, students, agents, trainers. Members of the faculty he had seen about campus, but couldnât tell you their names. Young teenagers with their faces full of hate. Middle-aged men and women who vaguely resembled children Simon used to know. All of them demanding he be punished. Lock him up and throw away the key, one poster read.
Simon had gazed around in absolute shock.
